The Christmas season is back, it’s that time of the year when you make cookies, eat a lot of rich foods and drink more than usual… By the time the New Year rolls around you’ve eaten so much you decide as a first New Year’s resolution to start a diet that is even more frustrating considering the past weeks you’ve had. 🙂 Yeah, well I’m not going to be a party pooper and tell you not to eat during the holidays, and I won’t be the one telling you to get on a strict diet in January either. Diets are a no-go zone for me… I believe there are other ways to stay healthy and maintain a correct weight, like with this Almond Milk Chai Latte! It’s all about balance !
But before I get into why I chose to share this Chai Latte with you today, I’d like to take a quick look into my past year. In a few days it will officially have been 1 year since I left the digital marketing industry to start my freelance activity, live by my rules and for my personal needs. Professional reconversion seems to be all the rage lately, especially in my age group, maybe because millennials like me aren’t getting fulfillment in their professional lives like our parents got at our age. Maybe we’re too impatient and want it all right away, or maybe society has made us indifferent to staying in the same company, or having the same job for the rest of our lives… It sometimes seems that we are producing high efforts for low rewards.
I’ll only speak for myself, for me it just wasn’t worth it anymore. Having the glory of working for amazing and big companies was great and I’ll never regret everything I learned in 7 years, the thrill of launching merchant websites for my biggest clients, participating in once in a lifetime events or product launches, or just being proud to be behind a brand, a name, an image, a person. Let’s not even talk about the wonderful people I met along the way whom have become my close friends today. Those years will always be mine to remember, and have given me the tools to have the courage to do what I’m doing today with confidence and most importantly without regret.
This past year has been a soul searching year for me, I feel like I finally discovered my real self – at 30 year’s old – thanks to my new lifestyle as well as my daily meditation activities. I’ve learned how to be in tune with my body, which has always been such an important part of my life due to my health issues. It is so important to listen to ourselves, and take the time to contemplate our lives and the choices we have made in order to make the necessary changes if it’s not what we want for ourselves. It’s not about going with the flow, doing what everyone else is doing, it’s about doing what’s best for ourselves as we only have one life to live.
I plan to continue developing myself in 2018, on a personal level but also on a professional one so that everything I do in my life is in harmony with who I am and what my body and mind needs to be happy and passionate everyday. #resolutions (let this blog article be a constant reminder for me next year 😉 )
Okay so now that I’ve said my peace on 2017, here it goes for the Almond Milk Chai Latte !
Firstly, if like me you’re not a huge fan of Eggnog, or don’t drink alcohol, this recipe is a great substitute for the holidays. When drinking it you feel the christmas warmness inside, it’s smooth and has an explosion of spices that gives you energy for the rest of the day.
Given that it is made with Chai black tea, I wouldn’t drink it in the evenings. Black tea has more caffeine than green tea – approximately 72 mg per cup vs 50 mg per cup for green tea. It is high in polyphenols which are natural organic chemicals or plant compounds also present in fruit and vegetables making them bright in color. They are known to be some of the best antioxidants for our diets, have great anti-inflammatory benefits and are good for the brain, heart and gut. Do be careful when buying Chai Tea for this recipe, that it is good quality tea, because many teas out there are full of pesticides which beats the purpose of putting healthy nutriments in your body.
I usually buy loose tea in high-end tea houses and rarely supermarket brands.
Chai Tea is especially good for you because it is also made with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, black pepper, clove and fennel. All of these ingredients have amazing benefits for digestion, can help with heart disease, nausea and are strong anti-inflammatory nutriments. I use these ingredients daily in my recipes, but I also use them on my body in the form of essential oils regularly.
I feel that I am in a way cleansing my body when drinking this tea which is a win-win situation during the holidays (it’s the little things that count 😉 ). You can make this latte with any kind of nut milk or regular milk, according to your diet restrictions or intolerances. I choose to drink Almond milk on a regular basis now – for diverse reasons – but I always buy the brand that is enriched in calcium in order not to miss out on my daily calcium intake.
1. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until it just starts to simmer, then immediately remove from heat.
2. Add the chai tea bags and leave to steep for 5 minutes. Remove and discard the tea bags, then add the rest of the ingredients and whisk well to combine.
3. Warm up again over low heat for a few minutes until warmed through.
4. Serve warm with a dollop of coconut whipped cream if you wish!
