They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Personally I’m not a big breakfast person unless it’s a late brunch on weekends. When I do have breakfast, eating heavy foods like bread or brioche, croissants or pancakes tends to give me a sugar rush but doesn’t actually nourish my body for the day. And let’s not even talk about the bloating and calories…
So I find ways to have a healthy and nourishing breakfast with some of my favorite superfoods. 🙂
Chia seed pudding is one of my favorites, topped with all sorts of fruit, and then there are smoothies and shakes.
Shakes are great for a breakfast on-the-go, to take with you on your way to work, or just for an easy meal with everything you need inside. I make them ahead of time so that all I need to do is take it out of the fridge to drink the next morning.
Some can have more or less calories, but if you play it right you can adapt the recipe to your body’s needs. Adding superfoods, energy boosts, choosing to make it dairy-free or not – you name it!
This recipe calls for a superfood that I recently discovered : a root called Maca.
This South American and more specifically Peruvian root is a member of the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cabbage. You’ll find it in the form of a powder after it has been harvested and grounded down.
Not only does it have a pleasant taste, but its benefits include a positive effect on hormonal balance, energy levels and is a health booster. It also contains a higher calcium level than milk which can be interesting for those of you who don’t digest milk easily.
This is also the first superfood that I come across that has benefits for Men and Women’s hormonal, testosterone and overall fertility balance! (a strong aphrodisiac too apparently) 😉
You’d have to ingest a 1-3 tablespoons per day for it to have an actual effect on your body so don’t expect miracles after just one intake. 🙂
They call it the “feel good” superfood! You’ll find it online on amazon, or in organic stores. I easily found it at my local organic store “La Vie Claire”.
It’s so interesting to read about the many benefits of this root that you need to check out this article: Top Maca root benefits
